Welcome to a unique opportunity for self-expression and emotional exploration! Writing
a letter can be a powerful way to process your thoughts and feelings. You can choose
how you wish for me to respond: either directly to you or anonymously shared on the
website and our brand new Share with Sharlotte Podcast.
Why Write a Letter?

A therapeutic letter serves as a valuable tool for navigating complex emotions and situations. Whether you want to address experiences of injustice, untangle complicated relationships, or articulate feelings when direct communication might be too challenging, this process can help illuminate your inner thoughts.

This letter-writing exercise invites you to delve deep into your emotions and can even help reshape your narrative. Through this exploration, we may uncover aspects of your experiences that deserve attention, and this may lead you to find forgiveness or clarity, helping you take meaningful steps forward in your journey.

Feel free to express your emotions, needs, grievances, and thoughts in an open and honest manner. Here, you have the freedom to write without the constraints of spelling, formatting, or penmanship. This is a space to be raw and unfiltered.

The Benefits of Writing a Therapeutic Letter

Writing can be incredibly liberating. It allows you to express a wide range of emotions — from anger and sadness to gratitude and love. Engaging in this exercise serves as a safe space to release the feelings you may have been holding inside and to speak your truth.

To help you get started, I’ve compiled some initial prompts for you to consider. Once you begin, you may find that your thoughts flow effortlessly onto the page:

1. Reflection on Past Experiences: Write a letter to your younger self. What would you tell them about the challenges they faced? How might this understanding help you recognise your current needs and triggers?

2. Identifying Triggers: Describe a recent situation that triggered strong emotions in you. What was the event, how did you feel, and what need was highlighted by this experience?

3. Expressing Unfinished Business: Think of a past relationship or situation that still weighs on you. Write a letter to the person involved, expressing what wasn’t said and how it affected you. What needs were unmet in that situation?

4. Exploring Feelings of Safety: Write about a time when you felt truly safe and secure. What made you feel that way? Contrast that with a time when you felt unsafe. What needs were present in those experiences, and how do they inform your current reality?

5. Addressing Unresolved Grief: Write a letter to someone you have lost or a situation that you are grieving. Share your feelings, what you miss, and how their absence affects your life. Reflect on what needs to be acknowledged and validated in your grief.

6. Understanding Suffering: Explore a significant trauma in your life. Write about how this experience has shaped your beliefs and behaviours. What needs arose from this trauma that you may not have recognised before?

7. A Letter of Forgiveness: Consider someone you need to forgive, whether it’s yourself or another person. Write a letter expressing your feelings and what it would look like to release that burden. How does this relate to your needs and triggers?

8. Future Aspirations: Imagine your ideal self in the future. Write a letter from that version of you back to your current self. What advice would they give you about overcoming your triggers and addressing your unmet needs?

9. Writing to Your Emotions: Choose an emotion that frequently surfaces for you. Write a letter to that emotion, asking it questions about why it appears and what it’s trying to tell you. What needs does it highlight?

10. Cultivating Self-Compassion: Write a letter to yourself filled with compassion and understanding. Acknowledge your struggles and celebrate your strengths. What needs do you recognise as essential for your growth and healing? These prompts can help clients tap into their emotions and experiences, promoting healing and deeper self-awareness.

Getting Started

Please identify yourself with two names, something you would recognise when published, either via our podcast or website. You can choose your first pet and favourite colour or mother’s middle name and your father’s favourite drink, it’s up to you, make it meaningful.
